We have been using ground turkey instead of ground beef for a while now. We have even used turkey sausage and while yes you can tell the difference, most the time if you didn't know it was turkey you wouldn't think twice and these sloppy joes were no exception. Plus ground turkey is so much better for you than beef, so why not?
Turkey Sloppy Joes:
1lb ground turkey
1/4 cup diced bell pepper (half a normal to small bell pepper)
1/4 cup diced white onion (Due to my gallbladder I substituted 3 Tablespoons dried minced onion)
1 Tablespoon fresh minced garlic (you may use less if you aren't a huge garlic fan like we are)
or good sprinkle of garlic powder
2 teaspoons yellow mustard
1/2 cup ketchup
1/2 cup BBQ sauce
2 Tablespoons water
salt and pepper to taste
Brown the turkey (you can drain the fat if you want, we get the leanest ground turkey we can find and usually there is so little fat that it isn't worth draining it.) then add the green pepper, white onion and garlic. After about 3-5 minutes or the peppers and onions have started to soften and lose their moister add the ketchup, bbq sauce, mustard, and water, mix and let simmer for 3-5 minutes. Salt and pepper to taste.
